BHCC is part of the Massachusetts public higher education system, which includes 15 community colleges. Founded in 1973, BHCC is the largest community college in Massachusetts, serving more than 14,000 students each semester across all modes of instruction. The College offers more than 100 certificate and degree programs that prepare students to enter four-year institutions or to enter the workforce prepared for better and more highly skilled jobs. Sixty-seven percent of students are people of color and more than fifty percent are women.

Position Description:

We are seeking an Academic Counselor t o assist the College in providing a success coaching model for students. The model includes a network of support systems to identify student needs, address student challenges and provide appropriate services and referral, in an effort to enhance student success and retention.

Specific Duties:

  • Providesuccesscoachingbasedonbestpracticestoaddressstudenttransitionissuesand contemporarychallenges.
  • Administerandinterpretassessmentprotocolstoidentifythestrengthsandweaknessesofnew studentsinregardtotheirentry-levelbasicskillsandmotivation.
  • Compileaprofileofeachnewstudentanddevelopapersonalizededucationalplanutilizing electronicresources. AssistwithmatchingthestudentwithaLearningCommunityrelevantto his/herpriorexperience,skillsetandfuturegoals.
  • Providethearrayoftraditionalstudentsupportservicesincludingenrollment, financialaid, academiccareer/vocational, andtransferadvising;administerandinterpretacademic andpersonal assessments;developandadministersupportworkshopsincollaborationwithotherCollege
  • offices;consultwithfacultyandstaff;exploresupportingresourcesandmakeappropriatereferral; andserveasaliaisontocommunityagencies.
  • CollaboratewiththeStudentActivitiesOfficeandPeerMentorsonourcomprehensivenewstudent advisingandorientationprocess.
  • Assistwiththeadvisementandregistrationofallnewstudentsregardingtheiracademicplan, courseselection/sequencing,curriculum/concentrationselectionandchanges,andtransition issues.
  • Monitor and provide support to students who are on academic probation
  • Collaborate with Boston Public Schools and Community Based Organizations to provide a smooth transition and ongoing support for recent BPS graduates attending the College.
  • Assistinthehiring,trainingandsupervisionofpeeradvisors.
  • ServeasaresourceforLearningCommunitySeminarinstructor,facultyadvisorsandfaculty participatinginourdepartmentaladvisingmodel.
  • Provideassistanceandsupportforspecialstudentprogrammingrelatedtostudentretention.
  • ParticipateintheimplementationoftheCollege'sLife mapinitiative,a comprehensivephilosophy of engagingstudentsinthecreationandcontinuedassessmentofanacademic,careerandlifeplan

  • Master'sdegreeinEducation,Counseling,Psychologyora closelyrelatedfield;withthree{3) yearsexperienceand/or traininginvolvingcollegeadmissions,academicadvisement,career development, orprogram/project management; oranequivalent combination ofeducation, trainingandexperience
  • Experienceworkingwithstudentsinastudentservices/clientservicesorequivalentsetting
  • ProficiencyinstudentinformationsystemsaswellasMSWordandExcel
  • Excellent,demonstratedverbalandwrittencommunicationskills
  • Provenabilitytoworkwithadiversefaculty,staffandstudentpopulation
  • Abilitytowork2evenings perweek(11a.m.-7p.m.)andsome Saturdays duringregistration periods

Salary Range: $50,785.00-$62,212.00 Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement.
