Working Title: Retention Specialist/Academic Advisor

Job Summary/Essential Functions:

Eastern Washington University invites applications for a Retention Specialist/Eastern Advantage Advisor in our Academic Success Center.

The Eastern Advantage Retention Specialist, housed within the Academic Success Center, will deliver and coordinate broad professional support to students through student-centered services for the program. This position directly reports to the Associate Director of Eastern Advantage.

- Assist with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of program services (i.e. advising, workshops, FYE course) for assigned incoming freshmen who participate in the Eastern Advantage program and those EA participants who persist at the institution.

- Collect, prepare, and disseminate quarterly program data reports.

- Collaborate with EA team to develop and implement quarterly curriculum and programming which infuses educational support methods, and best practices, to assist students in their academic and social preparedness and integration during the early part of their undergraduate careers.

- Provide one-on-one advising to Eastern Advantage freshmen cohorts and all previously assigned continuing second year EA advisees. Provide general academic support including course selection and sequencing, curricular development, major/minor selection, declaration, and career exploration. Work collaboratively with students to complete an accurate academic plan.

- Establish and maintain confidential records/files for students using university systems.

- Assist with the Eastern Scholars Academy each summer prior to the start of EWU's academic year.

- Support the Academic Success Center's annual programming which includes, but not limited to, academic, cultural, social and educational events.

- Participate in campus-wide advising meetings as scheduled and update team on relevant issues and/or changes that effect students.

- Facilitate student success by building collaborations with other faculty, staff, and off-campus resources.

- Familiarize self with on and off campus resources to be able to make appropriate referrals for students as needed.

- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt or, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Successful applicant will be required to pass a background check for continued employment.

This position is budgeted to work 11 months each year. As a result, the position will schedule approximately 21 days off as unpaid leave of absence. Position will receive full benefits throughout all 12 months of the year, and will also receive paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, social work, or related field of study from an accredited university/college.

- Work experience utilizing educational best-practices, particularly in the area of academic advising and facilitating student success inside and outside of the classroom.

- Professional experience with programs that provide services to college students from underrepresented and/or first generation populations.

- Evidence that demonstrates an ability to build partnerships and work effectively in a team setting.

- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency and/or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Teaching experience in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, social work, or related field of study.

- Experience working in higher education project advising and/or administering study skills workshops to students.
