    VPSE C2L-PHL is a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania's Division of the Vice Provost for Student Engagement (VPSE) and Career Connected Learning Philadelphia (C2L-PHL) to facilitate program activities including but not limited to service-learning projects, career exploration and mentoring, and college readiness.

    The VPSE C2L-PHL STEM Program Leader within the University of Pennsylvania's Division of the Vice Provost for Student Engagement (VPSE) oversees the development, implementation, and management of academic-year and summer STEM student engagement programs. These programs are designed for Philadelphia public middle and high school students, including the FIRST LEGO League Challenge. This role requires collaboration with university colleagues, external partners, and local schools to promote initiatives that inspire students, particularly those from low-income or underrepresented backgrounds, to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields.

    Job Responsibilities

    Program Management:
    • Plan, implement, administer, and evaluate STEM-focused programs, including VPSE school-year and summer programs and the FIRST LEGO League Challenge. Ensure that these programs align with the University's goals, student needs, and funding requirements.
    • Develop and modify program goals, objectives, and activities to meet evolving needs and ensure long-term success.
    • Establish operating policies and procedures for the smooth functioning of STEM initiatives.


    Supervision and Staff Development:
    • Provide full supervisory oversight of program staff, including part-time Penn graduate and professional student assistants. This includes conducting staff meetings, training programs, and day-to-day management.
    • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of part-time student instructors, ensuring they meet program standards and contribute effectively to program goals.


    Budget and Resource Management:
    • Develop and manage the program's operating budget. Ensure that resources are allocated efficiently to support programming, staffing, and student engagement activities.


    Student Recruitment and Support:
    • Oversee the recruitment, testing, and selection of students for VPSE STEM programs, ensuring outreach to underrepresented and low-income students.


    Program Evaluation and Compliance:
    • Design and implement evaluation processes to monitor program effectiveness, student progress, and adherence to funding requirements.
    • Prepare comprehensive reports on program outcomes and status for internal stakeholders and external funding agencies.


    FIRST LEGO League Challenge Oversight:
    • Manage VPSE's FIRST LEGO League Challenge program, which introduces students to robotics through engaging, hands-on learning. Lead efforts to integrate this program into existing STEM pathways, guiding middle and high school students in developing critical thinking, coding, and engineering skills.
    • Coordinate the implementation of the FIRST LEGO League Challenge annual competition, ensuring smooth operation and alignment with university goals.
    • Collaborate with school districts, community partners, and competition organizers to create a robust pipeline of STEM talent.


    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree and 2 to 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
    • Master's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in STEM educational programming, counseling, teaching, or administration. Experience working with both middle and high school public school students is a priority.
    • Demonstrated expertise in STEM curriculum development, program management, and student engagement strategies.
    • Strong administrative skills, including experience in budget management, staff supervision, and strategic planning.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with students, families, educational institutions, and external partners.
    • Proven commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education.
    • Excellent technical, organizational, supervisory, and leadership skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, with the capability to present complex ideas clearly and confidently.
    • Proficient in data analysis, project management, and curriculum development.
    • Knowledge of post-secondary admissions processes, including financial aid counseling.
    • Commitment to supporting underrepresented students and ensuring their success in STEM pathways.
