Associate/Full Professor and Department Chair, Department of Counseling
Position Description
Seattle University, a nationally ranked Jesuit-Catholic institution located near downtown Seattle, seeks a highly collaborative, innovative tenured professor and administrator to lead the Department of Counseling (COUN) as the Department Chair in the College of Education. The Counseling Department in the College of Education has four CACREP-aligned programs: Clinical Mental Health Counseling On-ground (CMHC), Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling (OCMHC), School Counseling On-ground (SC), and Online School Counseling (OSC). Each program focuses on preparing emerging counselors to be social change agents and advocates for diversity, anti-racism, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Chair of this newly formed unit will shepherd the department through a time of innovation, organizational change, and rapid growth of new degree programs including fully online, blended learning, and traditional in-person degree programs. Option for remote work.
The Counseling Department Chair will provide important leadership, as faculty enter the final stages of CACREP accreditation for new online programs, in line with current fully accredited on ground Counseling programs. In addition, this Chair will also provide support to faculty working to enhance and reimagine existing programs and expand newly developed programs. In accordance with CACREP standards, the Department Chair will have responsibility for leading and ensuring coordination of departmental activities, including responding to inquiries regarding the Counseling Department as a whole, providing input and making recommendations related to departmental budgets and expenditures, and providing year-round leadership to support the effective operation of the department and its programs.
At the College level, the Chair of the Counseling Department will provide leadership that increases the College focus and integration of global and international learning experiences, as well as an increased focus on faculty research and scholarship. The College seeks a Counseling Department Chair who is equity-minded and can think and lead with an interdisciplinary lens. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, strategic and visionary leader and an accomplished scholar. Additionally, the new Counseling Chair will be an innovative instructional leader, skilled communicator, teacher and facilitator, with evidence of strategic leadership and a demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, we seek a leader who is committed to fostering the development of both tenure-track and term faculty while building community and belonging within the department and College. Successful candidates will join a social justice-oriented College of Education informed by Seattle University's commitments to inclusive excellence, diversity, equity, and inclusion. See Seattle University's Strategic Directions: https://www.seattleu.edu/strategic-directions/ and LIFT SU: Inclusive Excellence Action Plan for Racial Equity and Antiracism: https://www.seattleu.edu/diversity/lift-su-our-action-plan/.

Overseeing the implementation of a strategic vision for the Department, the Chair is also responsible for faculty hiring and evaluation process, curricular planning and scheduling, departmental operations and budgeting, support for teaching, research, and service activities, attracting and retaining excellent students from a diverse range of backgrounds, and partnerships within and across the College, University, and Region. The Counseling Chair is responsible for a growing faculty including tenured and tenure track faculty, clinical/teaching faculty, adjunct faculty, and full-time staff. Across diverse types of faculty, the Counseling Chair will demonstrate the ability to foster strong community and collaboration within the Department.
