Senior Special Program Coordinator, STEM Starter Academy

MCCC Unit Professional position, Grade 5

Campus Location: Lynn

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

SALARY: Anticipated starting salary is $67,136.00 - $69,000.00. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

STEM Starter Academy was established for community colleges to provide wraparound support and services to a diverse body of students earning STEM certificates and degrees. The goal is to increase North Shore Community College student persistence and attainment rates for transferring to 4-year STEM programs or entering the workforce. The position will work closely with the Dean of STEM and Business, STEM Faculty and Program Coordinators, Academic and Career advising, and the Pathway Navigators to provide a broad range of services including new student orientation; the STEM Club, affinity groups targeting student success, semester alert information, case management, data collection and analysis. The Coordinator will also work to identify and eliminate barriers to student learning, retention, persistence, and success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Engage in the outreach, recruitment, and retention of students for the STEM Starter Academy Grant and the Grant's initiatives.
  2. Identify strategies which support the success and retention of STEM Starter Academy students in collaboration with the Dean of STEM and Business and Division of Academic and Student Development
  3. Direct academic support programs for STEM Starter Academy in coordination with faculty including, STEM Summer Academy, Math Success Labs, and other activities which may be identified in Item 2.
  4. Plan, Manage, and coordinate activities of STEM Starter Academy including curriculum alignment, faculty involvement in outreach and advising, and STEM student peer mentoring.
  5. Attend monthly DHE meetings and act as liaison with DHE STEM Starter Academy leadership and staff.
  6. Work collaboratively with Student Enrollment Services and the Student Support Center to register, orient, and advise students.
  7. Employ the STEM Starter Academy's case management model to direct NSCC's STEM Coaching program including: recruiting, supporting, advising, and tracking a cohort of students for enrollment, persistence, and completion throughout their programs of study.
  8. Coordinate STEM communications to inform students, faculty, and staff of current job postings, STEM events, and opportunities.
  9. Collaborate and coordinate with STEM Starter Academy Staff in monitoring student progress toward academic goals and providing appropriate academic advising/support/resources and interventions.
  10. Work collaboratively with the Pathway Navigators, Academic Advisors, and STEM Starter Academy Advising staff to develop strategies that support student retention and success with a focus on semester to semester persistence and the accumulation of credits toward a chosen degree program with pace or momentum in mind.
  11. Provide referrals and support to students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises which may impact academic performance.
  12. Use Navigate to communicate and support students and to manage and maintain student notes, reports, and summaries. Ensure that these tools are used appropriately and consistently by the STEM Starter Academy Grant staff members.
  13. Promote the STEM Starter Academy Grant in collaboration with Marketing, the Office of Student Engagement, and other NSCC Departments.
  14. Serve as the advisor of the STEM Club.
  15. Arrange for speakers, mentors, networking events for students to promote STEM careers.
  16. Assist, as needed, with college events such as registrations, orientations, commencement, and engagement activities.
  17. Coordinate evaluations and reporting with the Institutional Research Office and the UMass Donahue Institute to ensure NSCC participation in all STEM Starter Academy evaluation efforts.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the collective bargaining agreement.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field with experience and/or training in educational or career counseling, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A proven commitment to the values of access, equity and inclusion.
  • Available to work in person at our campus in Lynn, MA.
  • Available and willing to work occasional early mornings, evenings and/or weekends.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Experience working on student success. Community College experience preferred.
  • Experience establishing effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote a culture of inclusion among people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural, accessibility, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Strong presentation/instructional skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Evidence of independent and effective work within a fast-paced and multifunctional academic student service environment.
