Job Description Summary
This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position. This substitute position is needed while the permanent position is vacant. The anticipated duration of the appointment is from early April to early June.
DEFINITION
Under the general supervision of the assigned administrator and in collaboration with the division chair/lead faculty, provide technical assistance to the Construction and Welding program faculty for the effective operation of the instructional programs, including equipment maintenance, laboratory upkeep and setup, and student learning support. This position could be assigned to work at any of our educational sites.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is distinguished from other Laboratory Technician classes in that incumbents are required to be knowledgeable and/or acquainted with equipment, materials, and safe practices used in construction and welding labs. Incumbents in this position promote student learning outcomes by ensuring that instructional labs are maintained and furnished with equipment and tools that assist the students.
Essential Functions & Qualifications
As a substitute until the permanent position is filled, the job duties may be a subset of the below essential functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with development of department budgets, as required;
- Maintain, support and repair equipment and equipment logs;
- Order and maintain adequate instructional supplies for the departments and maintain inventories as necessary to support student success;
- Routinely inspect construction and welding labs to be consistent with student activities and supervise installation of new and removal/maintenance of old equipment;
- Estimate the scope and cost of work assignments and select and order necessary tools and materials to complete job(s) while keeping within budget;
- Support the oversight of laboratory safety procedures, routinely inspect and/or test safety equipment, respond to emergencies including injuries and spills of hazardous materials;
- Inspect, identify, and report unsafe facilities or equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ensure laboratories, supply rooms, lecture/demonstration areas, and any special purpose areas are maintained in an orderly and neat manner;
- Design, construct, assemble, adjust, test, and clean equipment and apparatus used in laboratory setting for experiments, demonstrations and special projects;
- Repair and calibrate or coordinate the repair of complex instruments and equipment;
- Assure that the proper laboratory supplies and equipment are ready for use at specified places and times as required by faculty and students;
- Assist students to find and check operation of equipment;
- Dispense equipment and supplies from shop and storage containers to students as required by laboratory experiments;
- Train and oversee the work of student laboratory assistants;
- Provide technical support while serving as a resource to faculty, students, and staff during laboratory and non-laboratory times;
- Assist with waste removal/recycling of laboratory materials;
- Operate forklifts, cranes, hoists and other equipment; and
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
- Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade.
- Completion of vocational training program or equivalent.
Preferred
- Associate degree in related Trades or Technical area.
Experience:
Required
- Two years of journeyman-level experience in related Trades or Technical area.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journeyman level experience may be substituted for college requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of:
- Working knowledge of Construction or Welding labs;
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS), hazardous waste generation, storage, and disposal;
- Safe working practices.
- Methods and practices used in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;
- Methods and practices used in working with welding gasses;
- Single and three-phase wiring systems;
- Hazardous Communications Regulations - "Right to Know";
- Fire Prevention, codes, and extinguishers;
- CPR and First Aid;
- Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
- Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
- District policies and procedures.
Ability to:
- Troubleshoot circuit breakers and fuses;
- Inventory and replace welding gasses;
- Prioritize and work independently on a variety of assignments;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.
Physical ability to:
- Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
- Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
- Work at heights;
- Ascend and descend ladder;
- Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;
- Reach in all directions;
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
- Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds; and
- Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
License and Certificates (current within the last year or must be continuously current):
Required
- Valid Forklift Certification or the ability to acquire certificate before operating a forklift;
- Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.
Preferred
- CPR and First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
- Class A Driver's License
Additional Information
This is a short-term/temporary position. Students currently enrolled at Cuesta College will be given priority.
