Job Summary

The Office of Strategic Relations and Communications (SRC) encourages applications for a six-month contract position with the news team covering the highly ranked and innovative College of Engineering and Applied Science! This media-forward position will mine the college for compelling news stories; elevate story ideas in a timely manner to the college's lead communicators and SRC media relations staff; and research, write and support media relations efforts crafted to increase the visibility of key faculty research and expertise through specialised publications of high interest to the college. This position will be responsible for identifying, sharing and producing news stories, Q&A's, media releases and other content in coordination with the college's communicators and the central campus news team, with the goal of generating content that will be of interest to external media and broader audiences. Key elements of the position include: identifying newsworthy research and expertise; developing news hooks and story ideas; breaking down sophisticated research into engaging content that anyone can understand; attracting positive attention from the media, specialized publications and key constituents in Colorado and nationwide for innovative research; demonstrating faculty expertise by working with journalists seeking experts on hot topics; collaborating and working with videographers, photographers and other members of the SRC team to build and share high quality multimedia story assets around topics in engineering; ensuring earned media placements are tracked and included in SRC-led analytics; and keeping both SRC and engineering teams updated on daily and ongoing work via internal project management platforms, such as Asana, allowing for real-time collaboration and feedback. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Story mining:
  • Identifying and sharing stories of wide public interest for news packaging by meeting with College of Engineering and Applied Science experts to discuss the latest research efforts and by keeping tabs on emerging and trending topics in engineering.
  • Developing strong news hooks, pitches and story ideas, including multimedia ideas, based on the current news cycle.
Writing:
  • Breaking down sophisticated research into engaging content that anyone can understand
  • Writing and editing content to ensure that it aligns with Associated Press Style, university external-relations style and university brand standards.
  • Author material that reinforces the desired brand positioning of the College of Engineering & Applied Science
Content coordination:
  • Regularly updating and coordinating with the Engineering communications team and Strategic Relations and Communications to ensure alignment around key goals, sharing of resources and lack of redundancy of efforts.
  • Attend key weekly editorial meetings in both units to ensure content and strategy alignment around prioritized topics or research themes (E.g., Space, Quantum, Sustainability, Biomedical, Climate Solutions).
  • Act as primary point of contact between SRC and the Engineering comms team to secure academic experts for incoming news requests, etc., and alignment with SRC media analytics team.
  • Activate niche publication strategy sought at getting CEAS research covered in key publications of interest to Engineering; identify editorial interests of targeted media which Engineering can satisfy.


What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary, part-time position working 20-30 hours/week position spanning 6- to 9-months, and does not include University benefits. There is a potential opportunity for an extension.
  • This position is a hybrid position, working both remotely and in- person at the CU Boulder campus.


What We Can Offer

  • The pay range is $34.00 - $37.00 per hour.

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree. Equivalent experience may substitute for the experience on a year for year basis.
  • Three years of professional experience that may include journalism, communications or mass communications, and preferably with experience in science, tech, and engineering journalism.


What You Will Need

  • Demonstrated news sense.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to produce clear, concise, engaging and original copy.
  • Solid organizational and communication skills.
